What is Rasputin’s Murder, and Why Did It Take so Much Effort?
When you hear the name Grigori Rasputin, it’s generally followed by something along the lines of “the guy who refused to die.” This Siberian mystic and advisor to the Russian royal family had a love for life that was quite literally iconic.
No, really. It took one bullet, a couple of poisoned cakes, and a freezing river to finish the job.
Set the Stage: A Russian Tragedy
Fast forward to 1916. Russia was a pressure cooker filled to the brim with political unrest, war, and a solid dose of royal scandal.
And Rasputin? Oh, he was knee-deep in it all, whispering sweet prophecies into the ear of a desperate Tsarina.
What’s with the Murder Fandom?
His influence didn’t sit well with the Russian nobility, who you could say were a teensy bit jealous. You know how it goes – too much power to a man nobody likes, and… boom! Murder plot.
Cue Prince Yusupov and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich, who decide they’re just about fed up with Rasputin’s antics.
The Worst Dinner Party in History
December 29, 1916. A late-night invitation to Yusupov’s palace, and Rasputin walks into the worst dinner date of his life.
First course: cyanide-laced pastries. But, what’s this? Rasputin eats and laughs, unaffected.
Relentless, Aren’t We?
Yusupov, not one to give up easily, shoots him in the chest. Success! Except… Rasputin gets up again, lunges at Yusupov, and flees.
Ah, but Rasputin is shot again. Twice! Collapses somewhere around the courtyard. Phew.

Oh, did we mention they also beat him, wrap him in a carpet, and dump him in the icy Neva River?
Because nothing says “overkill” like a triple murder attempt.
Why Does Rasputin’s Murder Matter?
Simply put, Rasputin’s prodigious demise was more than a high-strung melodrama. It was a symbol of the impeding collapse of the Romanov dynasty and a prelude to the catastrophic Revolution just around the corner.
